eCommerce alternative data for hedge funds, long-only and sell-side analysts

Data Purl gives public market investors a weekly, ticker-mapped view of how consumer companies price, promote and range their products online. Brands are resolved to their owners, and listed owners to their tickers with point-in-time accuracy, so product-level observations from 400+ retailers roll up to 1,900+ public companies without look-ahead bias.

What teams use it for

Fundamental research

Test management commentary on pricing, promotions and inventory between reporting dates, and explain variance in revenue and gross-margin models.

Quantitative research

Ready-built weekly aggregates for 400 companies in Ticker Analytics, and raw SKU-level history for building your own signals, with history back to 2013.

Macro and thematic

Category-level price and discount series on a matched-SKU basis, for inflation, trading-down and consumer-health themes.

What you get

  • Structured Datafeeds: granular SKU-level price, promotion and availability, mapped to tickers
  • Ticker Analytics: aggregated company metrics such as assortment, average price, markdown and in-stock
  • Sector Analytics: category composites and price and promotion intensity indicators
  • Delivery by Snowflake share, Amazon S3, the Data Purl portal or partner platforms

Common questions

Is the ticker mapping point-in-time?

Yes. Brand ownership and licensing changes are dated, so historical observations are attributed to the owner at the time, which avoids look-ahead bias in backtests.

How often is the data updated?

Weekly. The dataset refreshes on Wednesday evening US Eastern time (Wednesday night in the UK), so the new week is available before Thursday's US open.

Does it replace transaction data?

No. Data Purl is shelf-side: it measures what was listed, at what price and availability. Card and receipt panels measure what was bought. Many funds use both.
