What is assortment count?
The number of distinct products a brand or retailer has live for sale at a point in time.
Definition
Assortment count is the number of distinct active products. It can be measured at style level (one product in any colour or size) or at SKU level (each colour and size combination).
How Data Purl measures it
Data Purl counts active products per brand, retailer and category each week, with SKUs grouped into products so that a new colourway is not mistaken for a new product line.
Why it matters
Assortment expansion or contraction is an early read on a brand's strategy: a cut in wholesale assortment, a push into a new category, or a retailer narrowing its range ahead of a weak season.
Pitfalls
- Retailer website changes can create or remove listings without any real change in the range. Check step changes at one retailer against others carrying the same brand.
