What is promotional intensity?
How heavily a brand, retailer or category relies on discounts, combining how often products are promoted and how deep the discounts are.
Definition
Promotional intensity summarizes discounting activity over a period. It combines markdown breadth (how much of the range is discounted), discount depth (how large the discounts are) and duration (how long promotions run).
How Data Purl measures it
Data Purl tracks discounting weekly, so intensity can be compared across the same promotional events year on year, such as Black Friday, Prime Day or seasonal sales.
Why it matters
Higher promotional intensity at the same point in the calendar usually means weaker full-price demand or excess inventory, and pressure on gross margin.
