Appliance tariffs: list prices absorb them, promotions give them back
After 25% Section 232 tariffs hit imported appliances in April 2026 and manufacturers pre-announced 3.5-12% increases, the median matched appliance price was unchanged for three months. The first list-price moves were small (about 1-2.5%) and late, while markdown breadth among the most tariff-exposed importers rose by 14 to 22 points between March and August. Effective prices were roughly flat.
Data through August 2026.
The claim
Appliance makers announced price increases of 3.5-12% to pass through 25% Section 232 tariffs.
What the shelf shows
- List prices barely moved: the median matched appliance price was flat for three full months after the tariff took effect.
- The first real list-price increases landed only in late July and August, and were small.
- The adjustment went to promotions instead: the share of products on markdown rose sharply at the most tariff-exposed importers, handing much of the increase back at the register.
How we tested it
Matched-SKU median price by month, and markdown breadth (share of in-stock products on sale), March versus August.
Definitions of every measure are on the methodology page.
What it means
Announced increases were, for months, largely a list-price event. Reading shelf prices together with promotional intensity shows the effective price, which is what the consumer pays.
