One year of tariffs: Chinese brands gained shelf share in US home
A year into the 2025 US tariff escalation, brands of Chinese origin gained shelf share in 21 of 23 US home categories analyzed, with gains of about 10% or more in at least half of them. Rather than lifting prices broadly, retailers rebuilt assortments around cheaper products: in furniture, median prices fell an estimated 4% purely through shelf re-composition.
Data through March 2026.
The claim
Tariffs would strengthen domestic suppliers and raise prices on imported home goods.
What the shelf shows
- Gains were broad-based and largest in less technical categories such as furniture, fixtures and small HVAC.
- Much of the furniture growth came from retailer-exclusive brands made in China that act as quasi-private label: unfamiliar names, sold at a single retailer, competing on price.
- Patio furniture was an exception: steel and aluminum frames face Section 232 duties on top of China-specific tariffs, eroding the cost advantage.
- In small appliances, Chinese brands held position in categories where they own the core technology; in large appliances, certification and service networks mattered more than tariffs.
- Home improvement was the one sector where tariffs moderated gains, in metal-heavy subcategories such as faucets.
How we tested it
Brand origin mapped for products in 23 home categories; shelf share compared between pre-tariff periods and one year on.
Median category prices compared with matched-SKU changes to separate re-composition from price moves.
Definitions of every measure are on the methodology page.
What it means
Tariffs showed up less as inflation than as a reset of the assortment toward value. Category averages can fall even as unit costs rise, because the mix changes.
