What is assortment rationalization?
A deliberate reduction in the number of products a brand or retailer offers, often called SKU rationalization.
Definition
Assortment rationalization is the removal of slower-selling or overlapping products to simplify a range, reduce inventory and improve margins. It shows up as a sustained fall in assortment count.
How Data Purl measures it
Data Purl tracks active product counts and delistings (last-seen dates) weekly by brand, retailer and category, so a planned range reduction can be distinguished from temporary stock-outs.
Why it matters
Rationalization can support margins but may signal lost shelf space if it is retailer-driven. Watching which categories are cut, and at which retailers, separates the two.
